According to EFE, a dozen Democratic lawmakers have sued President Donald Trump’s administration for obstructing their legal right to oversee migrant detention centers in the United States.
Among the signatories are prominent leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who claim that the administration has deliberately blocked their visits to facilities where thousands of migrants are held, many under inhumane conditions.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in a federal court in the District of Columbia, accusing the executive branch of violating the law that allows legislators to inspect these facilities without prior notice.
«Blocking our oversight not only undermines the Constitution but also threatens our democracy,» said Adriano Espaillat, chair of the Hispanic Caucus, in an official statement.

Espaillat denounced that since the beginning of the Trump administration there has been a systematic pattern of dehumanizing migrants, criminalizing their presence, and using state power as a tool for a “cruel and chaotic” immigration policy.
The congressman also warned that by limiting legislative oversight, the government has fostered a climate of abuse and impunity inside detention centers.
Under U.S. law, lawmakers have the right to visit these facilities without prior notification to monitor the treatment of detainees.
However, legislators claim the administration has created multiple obstacles to block this access, including arbitrary restrictions, outright denials, and impossible-to-meet deadlines.
Alligator Alcatraz at the Center of Criticism

Joe Neguse, another of the signatory lawmakers, described the executive branch’s actions as a “blatant disregard for the law and constitutional order” that warrants a strong, legally grounded response.
The case is particularly relevant as civil rights organizations and activists have documented inhumane conditions in numerous detention centers across the country.
One of the most controversial facilities is the center known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” located in Florida and inaugurated on July 1.
The center holds up to 3,000 migrants and has been described by lawmakers and observers as a degrading detention site, with unsanitary conditions and inadequate temperature control.
Democratic Lawmakers Demand Access to Migrant Detention Centers
Democratic politicians who gained access to Alligator AlcatrazAlligator Alcatraz reported that migrants sleep in enclosed spaces similar to “cages,” without proper ventilation, with dirty bathrooms, and without air conditioning—despite Florida’s extreme summer heat.
The lawmakers’ lawsuit seeks to halt these restrictions and ensure that Congress can perform its institutional oversight role over the agencies responsible for migrant detention.
At the same time, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is running a program to distribute $608 million to state and local governments to build new centers or expand existing ones.
This initiative has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who warn that without effective oversight, the funds could perpetuate systemic abuses in facilities already facing multiple allegations.
