A 55-year-old Vietnamese migrant died while in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), marking another case in the growing number of migrant deaths in Miami.

The man was identified as Tuan Van Bui. He died on April 1, 2026, at the Miami Correctional Facility, according to Univision.

Another migrant death at a Miami detention center

The information was confirmed through an official notification sent by ICE to lawmakers days after the incident.

  • Why it matters: The case adds to a growing number of deaths under federal immigration custody, highlighting the broader issue of migrant deaths in Miami.

According to ABC News, Bui is the 46th person to die under these conditions during the current administration of Donald Trump.

The situation has intensified criticism regarding conditions in migrant detention centers.

Discovery unconscious and medical response

According to ICE, facility staff found Bui unconscious inside the detention center.

Emergency protocols were immediately activated in an attempt to save his life.

“Staff at the facility found Bui unresponsive and immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR,” the agency stated.

ICE added that emergency services were contacted without delay by the detention center personnel to avoid the death of the migrant.

“Staff immediately contacted emergency services, who responded quickly and initiated advanced life support interventions,” the agency said.

Despite these efforts, the migrant was pronounced dead that same day.

The death was officially reported to Congress the following week.

This procedure is part of mandatory protocols in cases of deaths under federal custody.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

Immigration history and background

Authorities indicated that Bui had an active deportation order dating back to 2005.

ICE also reported that he had multiple prior records.

These include arrests for theft, assault, and drug possession.

Charges for firearm possession were also mentioned.

Additionally, records indicate driving under the influence of alcohol or substances.

These details were included in the official communication regarding this new case of a migrant death under ICE custody.

Legal process underway after his death at an ICE detention center

Court records show that Bui filed a habeas corpus petition in February 2026.

This legal action seeks to challenge detention and request judicial review.

The goal was to contest his immigration detention.

A federal judge responded to the request on April 2, 2026.

The response came one day after the migrant death under ICE custody.

The judge ordered the government to detail its deportation plans before April 6.

The government submitted the report on time.

However, its contents have not been publicly disclosed.

The legal process remains sealed.

This case continues to draw attention amid ongoing debate over conditions in immigration detention centers in the United States.
