Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported Monday the death of another Mexican citizen under the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the United States and demanded an investigation to clarify the cause of death.

With this case, the total rises to 15 Mexican nationals who have died in immigration detention centers in the US since the return of Donald Trump to the White House.

According to EFE, the Mexican Consulate in New Orleans received notification from US immigration authorities about the death, which occurred on April 11.

The incident took place at the Winn Correctional Center, located in Winnfield Parish, Louisiana.

So far, the cause of death remains under investigation, according to an official statement from Mexico’s Foreign Ministry.

According to ICE’s official account, Mexican national Alejandro Cabrera Clemente, 49, was found unconscious by facility staff.

Following the case, the Mexican Consulate activated its protection protocols.

In coordination with the Consulate General in Atlanta, contact was established with the deceased’s family.

Consular authorities are providing legal assistance and support to relatives.

Additionally, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry remains in communication with US authorities to understand the circumstances of the case.

The government is also working to determine possible legal actions alongside the family.

The Ministry expressed concern over the repeated deaths in ICE detention centers.

It stated that these incidents reflect “serious deficiencies” in detention conditions.

It also emphasized that such conditions are incompatible with human rights standards and the protection of life, a key issue highlighted by the migrant death in ICE custody.

Growing scrutiny over ICE detention centers conditions

This case adds to other recent deaths of migrants under US immigration custody.

These incidents have raised concerns among civil society and human rights organizations.

Last month, Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country would bring the issue before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

The decision followed the death of José Guadalupe Ramos-Solano at a processing center in Adelanto, California.

According to US authorities, Ramos-Solano was found “unconscious and unresponsive” on March 25.

The president also said that formal letters would be sent to US authorities expressing dissatisfaction with what she described as “deficient medical care.”

On Monday, the Mexican government reiterated that it will continue using all available legal and diplomatic channels.

The goal is to protect Mexican nationals abroad, regardless of their immigration status.

Additionally, the Foreign Ministry instructed its consular network in the US to reinforce daily visits to detention centers.

It also reminded the Mexican community that assistance is available through consulates or the Consular Support Line.

  • What’s next: Mexican authorities will continue monitoring the investigation while maintaining diplomatic pressure to clarify conditions in US immigration detention centers, as the migrant death in ICE custody remains under scrutiny.
