A brutal assault that occurred in Florida has once again taken center stage in the national immigration debate following direct intervention by President Donald Trump, who shared a graphic video of the attack and reinforced his stance on immigration policies.

Trump posts violent attack captured on video and sparks an immigration controversy
Rolbert Joachin, 40, was arrested and charged by authorities with killing a woman on April 2 at a gas station in Fort Myers, according to court documents.
The victim worked as a clerk at the establishment.
According to reports collected by WBBH, a CNN affiliate, she belonged to the local Bangladeshi community.
Surveillance footage shows the full sequence of the attack: a man striking a vehicle with an object, apparently a hammer, before the woman exits the store to approach him.
Seconds later, the attacker strikes her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground. He then continues hitting her repeatedly in the head and torso before fleeing the scene.
Police received calls around 7:19 a.m. reporting the assault. Upon arrival, officers found the woman unconscious and without vital signs.
The release of the video sparks political reaction
The case took on national significance when Donald Trump posted the video on his social media platform Truth Social, describing the crime as a consequence of previous immigration policies.
“The video of her brutal murder is one of the most horrific things you will ever see,” Trump said in his post, referring to the suspect as an “animal.”
The president also directly criticized protections granted to Haitian nationals, linking the case to decisions made by the previous administration.
“The Biden administration granted him, and all Haitians, ‘Temporary Protected Status,’ a fraudulent program subject to massive abuse that my administration is working to end,” Trump wrote, further fueling the immigration video controversy.
Quick arrest and formal charges
Thanks to surveillance footage, authorities identified the suspect, who had a prior record, and arrested him the same day.
Joachin faces charges of homicide, vandalism, and property damage exceeding $1,000, considered a third-degree felony.
He remains in custody without bail following a hearing in Lee County and is scheduled to appear again before a judge on May 4.
The immigration background reignites debate

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the suspect entered the United States in August 2022 and had a final deportation order that same year.
However, he was granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which expired in 2024.
Trump used this point to intensify his criticism of the immigration system and recent judicial decisions.
“This murder should be enough for these radical judges to stop blocking my administration’s immigration policies and allow us to end this scam once and for all,” he added.
Community mourns after the crime
While the case fuels political debate, the local community is grieving the loss. A memorial has been set up outside the gas station in honor of the victim.
Friends and family describe her as a devoted mother and a person deeply committed to her faith.
“Right now, everyone is sad… not just me, not just my Bangladeshi community,” said MD Islam.
“All of us, around the world, are very saddened to see this news.”
What comes next in the case and national debate
The judicial process will continue in the coming weeks, while the case remains a focal point in the immigration debate in the United States.
Trump, for his part, ended his message with a direct appeal: “Please pray for the family of this innocent woman.”
“We will ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and decisively in this case,” he concluded, keeping the Trump immigration video controversy in the national spotlight.
