- World Cup Death Toll Rises
- Five Deaths Confirmed
- Investigation Remains Open
The official number of people who died during activities related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico City has risen to five, according to an announcement made Monday by the city government. However, officials did not explain the circumstances surrounding the fifth death or clarify why the new figure differs from the previous official count of four fatalities.
The updated report was presented during a press conference led by Mexico City’s Secretary of Health, Nadine Gasman, who revised the number of deaths recorded since the tournament began on June 11 while also providing an overview of the medical services delivered throughout the competition.
Mexico City Government Updates the Death Toll Without Explaining the Fifth Fatality
According to official information, a total of five Mexico World Cup deaths have now been recorded in the Mexican capital during activities associated with the tournament.
The update drew attention because just one week earlier, authorities had confirmed four deaths that occurred following celebrations after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador.
During her presentation, Nadine Gasman did not identify the fifth victim or explain whether the case had not previously been reported or whether the official tally had been revised.
The official simply confirmed the updated figure while presenting a summary of medical assistance provided since the start of the tournament.
More Than 3,500 Medical Emergencies During the World Cup
In addition to the revised death toll, the city’s Health Secretariat reported that emergency services responded to a total of 3,563 medical incidents related to World Cup activities.
According to the report, 93 people required transportation to hospitals for specialized medical care following various incidents that occurred during the tournament.
Gasman explained that the majority of cases involved minor injuries or medical conditions classified under the green category of the emergency triage system.
A total of 3,438 patients were classified as green, indicating non-serious injuries or medical conditions.
Officials also reported 109 patients requiring treatment under the red classification and 11 patients categorized as yellow, indicating serious conditions requiring priority transport.
Referring to the fatalities, Gasman stated:
«And black (category), which represents deceased individuals: five unfortunate deaths.»
Clara Brugada Says Mexico-England Match Ended Without Major Incidents
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada also participated in the press conference, once again expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the World Cup 2026 celebrations.
The mayor did not specify the updated number of victims while offering her message.
«Once again, I express my condolences and my full solidarity with the families of those who sadly passed away last Tuesday. We will continue supporting them.»
Brugada also emphasized that Sunday’s match between Mexico and England concluded without major security incidents.
«It ended with a clean security record, virtually without incidents.»
Authorities said the security and emergency medical operation deployed for the match successfully managed the large crowds without significant emergencies.
Investigation Into Isaías Trejo’s Death Continues

The four previously confirmed deaths occurred following celebrations of Mexico’s victory over Ecuador near the Angel of Independence monument.
Three people died from asphyxiation during crowd congestion along Paseo de la Reforma, while a fourth victim died later in a hospital after being transported from the celebration area.
The fourth fatality was identified as 19-year-old Isaías Trejo, whose death remains under investigation by the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office.
The agency confirmed Monday that the investigation remains open and stated that it has not ruled out the possibility of additional criminal offenses connected to the case.
So far, authorities have not clarified whether the newly reported fifth death involves a separate incident or represents an update to previously released information.
The lack of details surrounding the additional Mexico World Cup deaths continues to raise questions about the official casualty count related to 2026 FIFA World Cup activities in Mexico City.
