A 32-year-old Swedish citizen died after remaining hospitalized following a fight that broke out during a public viewing of a FIFA World Cup match in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Police confirmed the man’s death on Saturday in an official statement.

«In connection with the violent incident that occurred Tuesday evening at Islands Brygge, the victim has died at Rigshospitalet,» the department said.

The incident took place Tuesday night at Islands Brygge.

The fight broke out while hundreds of people were watching the Norway vs. Ivory Coast World Cup match on a giant outdoor screen.

The public viewing event was held along Copenhagen’s waterfront.

What began as a celebration of the World Cup quickly turned into a homicide investigation.

Suspect Turned Himself In

Police said the main suspect is a 31-year-old man, according to La Jornada.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Friday.

So far, investigators have not released additional details about the case.

According to the Danish tabloid B.T., the suspect was convicted of attempted murder in 2017.

The newspaper reported that he received a seven-year prison sentence.

B.T. also stated that the man has been prosecuted for rape.

Additionally, he is reportedly facing another criminal case involving a violent offense.

Authorities have not said whether those previous cases are relevant to the current homicide investigation.
