- Kamala Harris Criticizes Operation in Caracas
- Questions Military Legality
- Internal Political Tension
The capture of Nicolás Maduro in Caracas unleashed a strong political reaction within the United States.
For this reason, former vice president Kamala Harris publicly condemned the military operation led by President Donald Trump.
The statement was made on the evening of January 3 via a message posted on her X account.
In her statement, Harris questioned both the legality and the consequences of the operation on Venezuelan territory.
“It Was Illegal and Reckless,” Harris Says

Kamala Harris described the capture of Maduro as an “illegal and reckless” action, despite acknowledging the authoritarian nature of the Venezuelan leader.
“That Maduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator does not change the fact that this action was illegal and reckless,” she wrote.

The former vice president warned that this type of intervention has negative precedents in U.S. foreign policy.
“We’ve seen this movie before,” she added, noting that these operations often result in chaos and high human costs—another reason Kamala Harris criticizes the Caracas operation so sharply.
Kamala Harris’ Criticism of the Impact on the United States
Harris stated that the operation will not make the United States a safer or stronger country.
She also said that this type of decision does not help ease the economic burden faced by American families.
In her message, she emphasized that the consequences usually fall on ordinary citizens, not on the leaders who make the decisions.
In Harris’ view, the Caracas operation does not respond to real national security interests.
“It’s Not About Drugs or Democracy”
The former vice president went further by questioning the motivations behind the operation known as “Absolute Solution.”
“It’s not about drugs or democracy,” Kamala Harris stated in her post.
According to her analysis, the action is tied to oil and to Trump’s desire to project himself as a dominant figure in the region.
“If he cared about either of those, he wouldn’t pardon a convicted drug trafficker or sideline Venezuela’s legitimate opposition,” she wrote.
Military Risks of the Caracas Operation and Lack of a Plan
Harris also warned about the risks the operation poses to U.S. troops.
She said the president is “spending billions, destabilizing a region” without clear legal authority.
She also criticized the absence of an exit plan and of concrete benefits for the United States.
For the former vice president, these decisions increase uncertainty both domestically and internationally.
A Call for a Different Kind of Leadership
In the final part of her message, Kamala Harris stated that “the American people don’t want this and are tired of being lied to.”
She stressed that the country needs leadership with priorities different from displays of military force.
“The United States needs leadership whose priorities are lowering costs for working families,” she said.
She concluded by highlighting the importance of strengthening alliances, respecting the rule of law, and putting citizens first, according to El Heraldo de México.
