The story of Kevin González and his parents has triggered outrage and a wave of solidarity amid the tightening of immigration policies in the United States.

While the 18-year-old faces the final days of an aggressive battle against stage 4 colon cancer, his parents remain detained in Arizona after attempting to enter the country to see him before it is too late.

Kevin González’s family faces an extreme situation

Kevin, who was born in Chicago but spent much of his life in Mexico, was diagnosed with cancer after becoming ill during a family visit to the U.S. city over Christmas. Since then, his health has rapidly deteriorated.

According to his family, the teenager has already stopped eating and drinking, increasing the urgency for his parents to reunite with him.

Before returning to Mexico because of his worsening condition, Kevin remained hospitalized at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

From his hospital room, he recorded a message for his parents with the help of his brother, Jovany Ramírez.

“I just want to tell you that I love you. I miss you. And you will always have an angel in heaven watching over you.”

The teenager’s words have deeply moved thousands of people after the case began receiving media attention and community support.

According to reports, Kevin chose to return to Mexico because his physical condition worsened and he feared he would eventually no longer be able to travel.

Meanwhile, his parents began the journey toward the United States in hopes of being with him.

Parents were detained by ICE after attempting to cross the border

Kevin’s parents were detained last month in Arizona after attempting to enter the United States from Mexico.

The family had previously applied for a humanitarian visa, but the request was denied.

They currently remain in custody at the Florence Correctional Center.

Their immigration status remains unresolved, and uncertainty continues regarding what will happen after the court hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Their attorney reportedly advised them to plead guilty, although it remains unclear whether the judge will allow early release or deport them to Mexico before completing a 30-day sentence.

The possibility that they may never get the chance to say goodbye to their son has increased public pressure on U.S. immigration authorities.

Joaquín Castro demands the release of Kevin’s parents

The case reached the political sphere in the United States. Congressman Joaquín Castro publicly called on ICE to release the parents immediately due to the gravity of the humanitarian situation.

«Kevin González is only 18. He is suffering from stage 4 colon cancer and has days to live. He’s desperate to spend his last moments with his parents, but ICE detained his mom and dad after they tried to seek humanitarian asylum. This is the total cruelty of Trump’s mass deportation machine. I call for Kevin’s parents to be released immediately so they can be with their son», he wrote on X.

The statements increased attention surrounding the case and generated reactions from immigrant advocacy organizations and social media users.

Mexican Consulate continues monitoring the humanitarian case

The Consulate General of Mexico in Tucson confirmed that it remains in constant communication with the parents’ attorneys and continues supervising consular assistance related to the case.

Consular authorities also stated that they are closely monitoring possible repatriation scenarios while the family awaits a resolution that would allow them to reunite with Kevin before his condition worsens further.

For now, the future of the parents remains in the hands of immigration authorities and the judge overseeing the case, while Kevin González’s story continues generating concern in both Mexico and the United States.
