Cole Allen, accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, pleaded not guilty to four federal charges before a court in Washington.

The 31-year-old appeared in court Monday and denied the accusations while remaining in custody as the judicial process continues.

Allen faces one count of attempted assassination, a crime that could result in life imprisonment, along with additional charges related to the use and transportation of firearms.

He was also charged with assaulting a federal agent with a deadly weapon, a count later added by prosecutors in the District of Columbia through a revised indictment.

The events occurred on April 26, when Allen allegedly bypassed a security checkpoint and attempted to enter the hotel where the traditional White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place.

Among those attending the event were President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, along with other officials.

According to the indictment, the suspect entered armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives, prompting an immediate response from security teams.

Authorities claim Allen ran through the checkpoint and is believed to have fired at an officer before being subdued by law enforcement personnel.

Shooting at the Correspondents’ Dinner and evacuation of officials

The attempted entry triggered a shootout with security agents protecting the official event.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident forced the immediate evacuation of the president and members of his Cabinet.

Minutes before the attack, Allen allegedly sent a written message to family members stating that his targets were members of the Trump administration.

That document is now part of the evidence prosecutors are using to support the primary attempted assassination charge.

New charges for Cole Allen and controversy over detention conditions

Initially, the suspect faced three charges, but the grand jury later approved adding a fourth count related to the alleged assault on a federal agent.

A grand jury is the body responsible for determining whether probable cause exists to formally prosecute a suspect within the federal judicial system.

Zia Faruqui, the judge overseeing the case, publicly apologized to Allen over the conditions in which he was held after his arrest.

The judge stated that he spent several days in an isolation cell despite complaints raised by his attorneys, an issue that has now become part of the broader debate surrounding the case, according to EFE and Telemundo.
