A 21-year-old student and national gymnastics champion was killed in a shooting that took place in an apartment near the campus.

Kara Welsh, who was studying business administration at the School of Business and Economics, lost her life on Friday night, KARE11 reported.

This incident, which remains under investigation, occurred near the Minnesota border, according to Whitewater police.

The suspect, a 23-year-old man whose name has not been released, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at the Walworth County Jail.

Police have requested that the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office consider charges of first-degree intentional homicide.

Additionally, they are seeking charges for the use of a dangerous weapon to endanger safety and disorderly conduct while armed.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Whitewater police revealed that Kara Welsh and the suspect knew each other and that the shooting was preceded by an altercation between the two.

However, authorities have not provided further details about the motive behind the conflict or the nature of their relationship.

Welsh was not only an outstanding student but also an exceptional athlete. She was part of the Warhawks gymnastics team.

Last year, she became the national individual champion in the vault category at the NCAA Division III championship.
