The young man, who turned 27 on Tuesday, has been at the center of media controversy since his arrest in December 2024.
He is accused of murdering Brian Thompson outside a hotel in downtown Manhattan.
In addition to this charge, Mangione also faces other charges in New York and Pennsylvania related to murder and terrorism.
Despite the federal charges, Mangione has maintained his innocence.
He had pleaded not guilty
In April, he pleaded “not guilty” to all federal charges, and still faces the possibility of a death sentence if convicted.
One of the most heartfelt messages of support in the campaign came from a user identified as “Aelita from Portugal.”
She donated $270 and sent her best wishes to the young man on his birthday.
“Happy birthday, Luigi! Given the circumstances, I can only pray that you have a peaceful year. Surrounded by the love and support of your loved ones and the thousands of faceless, voiceless people who remain strongly present on this journey,” she wrote.
In addition to Aelita, many other donors have preferred to remain anonymous, demonstrating the campaign’s reach and the continued support Mangione is receiving in his legal fight.
The fundraising page indicates that the collected funds will be delivered to Mangione’s attorneys, who will use them to cover the high costs of his legal defense.
The case has drawn particular media attention due to the nature of the crime and the way the manhunt for Mangione unfolded.
Police tracked him through Central Park, to a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and eventually arrested him at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
The legal process continues, and the fundraiser remains a controversial topic, with a notable number of people willing to contribute to what they consider a just cause.
Meanwhile, Mangione faces an uncertain future, hoping his legal defense can reduce the grave consequences of the case.
