A five-year-old boy suffered serious internal injuries after his father accidentally ran over him while backing his car out of the family garage in Nebraska.

The accident happened while the child was playing hidden inside a cardboard box, a situation that quickly turned into a medical emergency and prompted a fundraising campaign to help the family cover treatment expenses.

According to El Heraldo de México, the accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, in North Platte, a city located approximately 280 kilometers west of Omaha.

According to police, the father was backing his vehicle out of the garage when he accidentally struck his son.

Authorities stated that the child had been hiding inside a cardboard box while playing.

The boy was identified as Bridger Hughes, age five.

Following the impact, the child suffered severe injuries to the upper part of his body.

The incident shocked the local community because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the accident.

The child required urgent medical attention because of the seriousness of his internal injuries.

After the accident, Bridger Hughes was airlifted by helicopter to the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Omaha.

The child continues receiving specialized treatment because of the internal injuries he suffered.

Following the incident, the boy’s grandmother launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe seeking financial assistance.

In the post, the family explained that doctors and nurses are working constantly to help the child recover.

“Doctors and nurses are working tirelessly to help him heal, but his recovery will be a long and difficult process,” the child’s grandmother wrote.

The family stated that Bridger’s parents remain at his side in Omaha while he continues to receive treatment.

As a result, both parents remain away from work and home while supporting the child during his recovery.

Family requests financial assistance after accident

In the GoFundMe message, the family described the emotional and financial impact caused by the accident.

“Our 5-year-old grandson, Bridger Hughes, suffered a terrible accident yesterday when he was accidentally struck by a vehicle,” the post stated.

The family confirmed that the child was transferred from North Platte to Omaha for specialized medical care.

They also explained that his recovery could extend over a long period.

The fundraiser states that travel costs, food, lodging, and other daily expenses have already begun accumulating rapidly.

“The financial burden is overwhelming,” the family explained in the campaign.
In addition to donations, relatives requested prayers and support through sharing the information.

“Any donation, prayer, or sharing of this information is deeply appreciated,” Bridger’s grandmother wrote.

The family stated that their priority is remaining by Bridger Hughes’ side while he continues receiving specialized medical treatment in Nebraska.
