Tensions ran high during a joint session of Congress this Tuesday, as Democratic lawmakers interrupted U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech with boos.

The situation escalated to the point that House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, had to intervene multiple times to restore order.

From the opening minutes of Trump’s speech, boos and jeers could be heard throughout the chamber. In response, Johnson and Vice President JD Vance, seated behind Trump, stood up and called for an end to the interruptions.

Johnson urged the chamber to «maintain quorum» and emphasized the importance of decorum in the legislative process—a gesture that Trump publicly thanked him for.

One of the most controversial moments of the night came from Democratic Congressman Al Green, 78 years old, from Texas.

Green stood up, waved his cane, and shouted back at Trump as Democratic lawmakers continued their boos.

However, his protest was quickly drowned out by Republican lawmakers, who responded with chants of «USA, USA» in support of Trump.

As the disorder continued, Mike Johnson called for order, but Green refused to back down.

Ultimately, the Sergeant at Arms escorted Green out of the chamber, marking an unusual expulsion during a presidential address.

«It Was Worth It»: Green Defends His Protest

Hours after his removal from Congress, Al Green addressed reporters, defending his actions and his decision to interrupt Trump’s speech.

The congressman stated that «it was worth it» to speak out against the budget cuts proposed by the Trump administration.

«I’ll accept the punishment. It’s worth it for people to know that some of us will stand against this president’s attempts to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security,» he declared.

Green’s protest, along with the reaction from Democrats, highlights growing concerns within the party regarding Trump’s proposed budget, which they claim would jeopardize essential programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

This highly charged episode underscores the deep political divide in Washington, particularly surrounding Donald Trump’s economic policies.

While Republicans argue that budget cuts are necessary, Democrats remain firm in defending social welfare programs.
