Publix Expands Frozen Fruit Recall Over Possible E. coli Contamination: Here’s What You Need to Check

Publix has issued a customer alert after expanding the voluntary recall of several GreenWise frozen fruit products due to possible bacterial contamination.
The supermarket chain is urging shoppers to check their freezers and avoid consuming certain frozen organic blueberries and mixed berries sold in its stores.
The recall now applies to all lots of the affected products after the company broadened the scope of the action as part of an ongoing public health investigation.
The recalled items were distributed across eight U.S. states and have been removed from store shelves while preventive measures continue.
Which GreenWise products are included in the Publix frozen fruit recall?
Publix said the recall includes GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Mixed Berries.
The company said the products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli. Publix also explained that it stopped selling these products in late June and confirmed that they remain unavailable to consumers.

The company later expanded the recall to include all lots of both products as a precautionary measure. The affected products were distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Publix recommends checking your freezer to see whether you recently purchased any of these products.
The bacteria can cause serious gastrointestinal illness
The E. coli O145 strain belongs to the group of Shiga toxin-producing bacteria, which are associated with potentially severe intestinal infections. Common symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea that may become bloody, and vomiting.
The FDA said that most people recover within about a week, although some patients may develop serious complications.
Health officials warn that young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness. One of the most serious complications is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that can damage the kidneys.
For that reason, authorities recommend seeking medical attention if severe symptoms develop after consuming any potentially contaminated food.
These products should not be consumed
Publix is urging customers not to consume any of the products included in the recall.
The affected items are:
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10 oz (UPC 41415-06453)
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48 oz (UPC 41415-12053)
- GreenWise Organic Mixed Berries, 10 oz (UPC 41415-06753)
- GreenWise Organic Mixed Berries, 48 oz (UPC 41415-12153)
The company said customers may either discard the products or return them to any Publix store for a full refund.
The expanded recall is part of ongoing precautionary measures while the investigation into the potential outbreak continues.
Publix keeps customer support available
The expanded recall follows an earlier announcement by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., based in San Carlos, Chile, regarding a specific lot of organic blueberries.
After reviewing the product’s traceability and the available epidemiological information, Publix decided to expand the recall to include all lots of both GreenWise frozen fruit products.
The company said customers with questions about the recalled products may contact Publix Customer Care.
The customer service number is (800) 242-1227, available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
Publix also said the investigation remains ongoing in coordination with public health authorities.
While the investigation continues, consumers are advised not to eat any of the recalled products and to request a full refund at any participating Publix location, according to the FDA.
