An argument over the safety of a two-year-old girl ended in a devastating family tragedy in Texas. A 17-year-old teenager and her 29-year-old brother were allegedly shot and killed by the young woman’s ex-boyfriend, who is also the father of her daughter.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning outside a home in Harris County, Texas.

The argument began over a child safety seat

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigation, Karen Lisbeth Rivera, 17, argued with her ex-boyfriend, Ángel Javier Rodríguez, 19, after he arrived to pick up their daughter.

Authorities said Rivera confronted him because his vehicle did not have a child safety seat to transport the toddler.

The argument quickly escalated, and investigators allege that Rodríguez pulled out a gun and opened fire on Karen.

After hearing the gunshots, Efrén Alberto Sidonio, 29, Karen’s brother, ran out of the house in an attempt to protect his sister.

He was also struck by multiple gunshots and died alongside his sister at the scene.

Authorities said both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The two-year-old witnessed the attack

The couple’s two-year-old daughter witnessed the double homicide but was not physically injured.

Investigators also reported that the suspect fired at other people who were at the scene, including the victims’ mother, who was not injured.

«That mother just lost a son and a daughter,» said Sgt. Michael Ritchie.

Ángel Javier Rodríguez was located approximately 20 minutes after the shooting and surrendered without resistance.

He was later charged with capital murder and booked into the Harris County Jail.

If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty, should prosecutors seek that sentence and all legal requirements be met.

Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the Texas family shooting and the relationship between the suspect and the teenage victim.
