The U.S. president, Donald Trump, announced this Wednesday the dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, in a move that marks a significant change within his inner circle.

Although the announcement was surprising, the president used a conciliatory tone when referring to the now former official.

“We care deeply about Pam, and she will move on to a new position—very necessary and important—in the private sector, which will be announced at a later date,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

In the same message, the president highlighted his relationship with Bondi and defended her performance at the Department of Justice, emphasizing her role in security matters.

“Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my attorney general over the past year,” Trump stated.

Todd Blanche assumes role as interim attorney general

Following Pam Bondi’s departure, the president appointed Todd Blanche as interim attorney general.

“Our Deputy Attorney General—a highly talented and respected legal mind—Todd Blanche, will assume the role of acting attorney general,” the president’s statement concluded.

Blanche, 51, has maintained close ties to Trump’s circle, having defended key figures such as Rudy Giuliani and the president himself in significant legal cases, including the one related to payments to Stormy Daniels.

Additionally, in his recent role, he led a prison interview of Ghislaine Maxwell, a figure linked to the Jeffrey Epstein case, a matter that has generated controversy both inside and outside the government.

Pressure and controversies surrounded Pam Bondi’s tenure

The Pam Bondi’s dismissal move comes amid growing pressure over her leadership.

In recent days, various media outlets had already pointed to a possible deterioration in her relationship with Trump.

One key factor has been the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, whose documents were partially released by the Department of Justice without resolving lingering doubts. This case has drawn criticism even from the president’s own base.

Additionally, the Department faced judicial setbacks in attempts to prosecute political figures, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, as well as Democratic lawmakers and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

These setbacks have weakened the perception of effectiveness within the Department of Justice under Trump’s legal strategy.

A key ally now exits the cabinet

Pam Bondi, 60, has been a loyal figure to the president for more than a decade, beginning with her public support during her time as Florida attorney general.

Within the cabinet formed in January 2025, she was considered one of the officials closest to Trump, making her departure even more politically significant.

Despite her dismissal, the president emphasized her performance.

Trump stated that the former attorney general “did an extraordinary job overseeing a massive crackdown on crime across our country.”
