  • ICE releases delayed detainee deaths reports
  • Deaths in detention increasing
  • Transparency concerns grow

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released several overdue reports on Friday regarding detainee deaths that occurred in early 2026.

The disclosure came after missing the 90-day deadline required by Congress, according to Telemundo.

The reports detail the deaths of four immigrants while in custody.

ICE Detainee Deaths: Reports Delay Raises Questions

The individuals were identified as Víctor Manuel Díaz, Heber Sánchez Domínguez, Parady La, and Luis Núñez Cáceres.

The deaths of Díaz and Domínguez were classified by ICE as suspected suicides.

  • Why it matters: The delay in releasing these reports has raised questions about the agency’s transparency.

It also comes amid an increase in deaths under custody.

Reports Contain Limited Details

The documents provide few additional details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The official causes of death remain under investigation.

This limits public understanding of what occurred inside detention centers.

The lack of detailed information leaves many questions unanswered.

The reports correspond to deaths recorded in January 2026.

They were released days after reports surfaced about the missed legal deadline.

Another Case Raises 2026 Total

Earlier in the week, ICE reported another death in custody.

Authorities identified the deceased as Aled Damien Carbonell-Betancourt, a 27-year-old Cuban national.

Agents found him unresponsive in his cell at a federal detention center in Miami.

Authorities attempted to revive him but ultimately pronounced him dead.

ICE also classified this case as a suspected suicide.

The official cause of death remains under investigation.

With this case, the number of deaths in custody in 2026 rises to 17.

Rising Deaths in US Custody and Detention Population

ICE reported that 33 detainees died in 2025.

This marks the highest number in more than two decades.

In 2024, the reported number of deaths was 11.

The increase has drawn greater attention to conditions in detention facilities.

As of early April, more than 60,000 immigrants remained in detention.

Although the number has recently declined, it remains high.

The current level exceeds figures recorded before Donald Trump returned to office.

The recent reports and statistics continue to fuel debate over oversight and transparency within the immigration detention system.
