A tragedy has shaken a Hispanic family following the murder of a young mother who was only 20 years old.

The victim, identified as Evie Jesica Gallegos, died after a shooting in Pueblo.

Her death has not only shocked the local community but also left two small daughters without their mother.

Authorities said a young man the same age has been arrested in connection with the crime and now faces serious charges.

Young suspect turns himself in

According to inmate records at the Pueblo County Jail, Leandro Medina, age 20, was arrested and is facing one count of first-degree murder.

Police said Medina voluntarily surrendered to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office on March 1 without incident.

Authorities had been searching for him after he was allegedly involved in the shooting that killed Gallegos days earlier.

The shooting that ended in tragedy

The incident occurred early in the morning of Thursday, February 26, at a home on East 14th Street.

Police reported receiving a call around 3:30 a.m. about gunshots in the area.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman inside the residence who had died. She was later identified as Evie Jesica Gallegos, 20.

During the same response, officers also found another person who had been shot.

According to police information, the injured victim had suffered at least one gunshot wound. The person was transported to a nearby hospital and was expected to survive.

Following the initial investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Medina on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

A crime that shocks the city

The case also reflects concerns about rising violence in the city.

Authorities said this is the second homicide recorded in Pueblo this year, while during the same period last year the city had reported no homicides.

Gallegos’ death has generated widespread concern not only because of the violent nature of the crime but also because of what it left behind: two small girls who must now grow up without their mother.

Evie Jesica Gallegos’ family asks for help after the loss

Following the killing, the family launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and support the young daughters left behind.

In the fundraiser message, relatives shared an appeal to the community:

“Many have heard the devastating news about the loss of our daughter Evie Gallegos. We are asking for funds for funeral expenses and a headstone. She leaves behind two small girls, and these funds will also go to help them. If it is in your heart to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. We also ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers during this time. God bless you.”

The family explained that the donations will help provide a proper farewell for Evie Jesica Gallegos and support the children who now face life without her.
