Several airports across the United States are experiencing long lines and delays lasting several hours due to the partial shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has now exceeded 20 days without a funding agreement in Congress.

The impact coincides with the start of spring break, one of the busiest travel seasons of the year in the country, which could further worsen the situation in the coming days.

Among the airports reporting the most problems are William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans.

In Houston, passengers reported lines stretching through waiting areas, staircases and baggage claim zones. In New Orleans, security lines reportedly extended into the airport parking area, according to posts shared on social media.

The New Orleans airport advised travelers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flights and warned that security wait times could reach up to two hours.

The partial shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began on February 14 after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement over immigration policy changes proposed by President Donald Trump.

Negotiations remain unresolved, leaving the department’s funding frozen.

Last week, the United States Senate voted on a bill that would fund DHS through the end of fiscal year 2026, but the measure was not approved.

One of the agencies most affected is the Transportation Security Administration. TSA employees are required to continue working without full pay until Congress reaches a budget agreement.

According to reports, workers received about 30% of their salary in the previous payroll cycle and are expected to receive no payment in the upcoming pay period.

The Trump administration has blamed Democrats for the DHS shutdown, while Democratic lawmakers argue that the two sides remain “far apart” in negotiations because Republicans have not accepted their proposed conditions.

Risk of further travel delays

With spring break season underway and no immediate resolution in sight, airport authorities warn that delays could continue throughout the week.

As long as the DHS shutdown airport delays situation persists, security checkpoints will operate with limitations that directly affect millions of travelers across the United States.
