On March 13, he was finally able to contact his family for the last time.
During that call, he expressed his desperation.
He said: “I think I’m not going to get out… I think I’m going to sign to be sent back to Mexico.”
He also added: “I’m tired, I’m locked up in here.”
Those were the last words his family heard.
The official version and the family’s doubts
Three days after that call, his family received devastating news tied to this migrant death under ICE custody.
Manuel Pérez, the young man’s father, was notified of his death.
Authorities stated that Roger had taken his own life.
They reported that he was found unconscious inside his cell.
The discovery occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, March 15.
ICE’s Florida office reported that two doctors attempted to revive him.
They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
However, the young man had no pulse.
In its statement, ICE maintained that it was an alleged suicide.
It also noted that the official cause of death remains under investigation.
The family does not believe this version.
An unresolved case
The official statement was released on March 18, but the migrant death under ICE custody case remains unresolved.
So far, the family still has no clear answers.
They have not received the young man’s body, according to Prensa Libre.
According to reports from U.S. media, Roger is the youngest detainee to die under ICE custody since Trump returned to office.
His death adds to a growing list.
The numbers continue to rise in 2026.
Each case raises new questions about what happens inside detention centers.
And leaves families waiting for answers that have yet to come.
