The United States Border Patrol is facing new controversy following the immediate resignation of its top official, Michael Banks.

Banks stepped down Thursday amid reports alleging that he traveled abroad to hire prostitution services.

Banks confirmed his departure in statements to Fox News.

“I feel that I’ve put the ship back on the right course — from being the most insecure, disastrous, and chaotic border to being the safest border this country has ever seen,” he stated.

The former chief added that it was time to step away after nearly four decades of service.

“It’s time to hand over the reins. It’s been 37 years, and now it’s time to enjoy my family and life,” he told the American outlet.

Investigation points to alleged trips involving prostitution

The resignation comes weeks after The Washington Examiner published an investigation into Banks’ conduct.

The conservative outlet revealed internal allegations in April involving supposed trips by Banks to Colombia and Thailand.

According to six current and former Border Patrol employees, Banks openly discussed paying for sexual services during those trips.

The allegations claim these trips occurred while Banks held other responsibilities within the immigration agency.

The Washington Examiner also published excerpts from a letter attributed to Banks.

In the document, the official reportedly informed subordinates about his retirement from public service.

“After more than 37 years of public service to the citizens of the United States of America, the time has come for me to retire and return home to Texas to dedicate myself to my family and my ranch,” Banks reportedly wrote.

So far, no official investigations related to the published allegations have been announced.

Authorities also have not indicated whether any previous internal disciplinary processes existed concerning the accusations.

CBP acknowledges Banks’ career

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) responded to Banks’ resignation through an official statement.

Rodney Scott publicly thanked Banks for his years of service.

“We congratulate him on his second retirement after returning to serve during one of the most challenging periods for border security,” Scott stated.

The commissioner also praised Banks’ recent work.

“We wish him and his family the best,” he concluded.

CBP did not mention the allegations published by The Washington Examiner.

The Border Patrol operates directly under CBP.

Michael Banks returned to Border Patrol after Trump’s victory

Banks had already temporarily retired from Border Patrol in 2023, according to CNN.

At that time, he expressed disagreements with the immigration policies of then-President Joe Biden.

After leaving the agency, he was appointed Texas “border czar” by Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Abbott spent years promoting hardline policies against irregular immigration.

Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in January 2025 marked Banks’ return to the federal government.

After taking office again, Trump appointed him chief of Border Patrol.

From that position, Banks became responsible for enforcing the anti-immigration policies promoted by the Republican president during his campaign.

His departure leaves vacant one of the most important positions within the current administration’s immigration strategy.
