Concerns about possible deportations in the United States continue to rise.
In light of this, immigration attorney Héctor Quiroga explained in an interview with CNN the key documents everyone should carry to safeguard their rights when dealing with immigration authorities.
According to Quiroga, everyone, regardless of immigration status, should have valid identification.
Examples include a passport, consular permit, or immigration document.
How to Act When Facing Authorities
This applies to residents, asylum seekers, and individuals undergoing immigration processes.
The attorney emphasized the importance of only answering essential questions, such as providing your name and identification.

Avoid sharing information about immigration status or reasons for staying in the country. Additionally, it’s crucial to ask the officer if you are free to leave.
If the answer is no, individuals have constitutional rights, including the right to remain silent and request an attorney.
Asylum Seekers and Family-Based Processes
Quiroga advised asylum seekers to carry documents proving their case, such as their A-number or an official letter confirming their process.
This can help avoid potential issues with immigration authorities, provided they are not involved in other legal infractions.
For individuals with family-based petitions, having a copy of the approved I-130 form or supporting documentation for their immigration process is essential.
These documents can serve as a temporary defense during interactions with authorities.
However, Quiroga cautioned that immigration policies could become stricter under new administrations.
