  • Inhumane Conditions Denounced

The area around the Delaney Hall immigrant detention center in Newark, New Jersey, became the scene Saturday of a new day of tension between groups with opposing views on President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

  • Why it matters: The confrontation comes after several days of unrest around the detention center, where protests continue over conditions denounced by detained migrants and their relatives.

Local media reported that a group of people supporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, went to the area around Delaney Hall on Saturday.

Their presence coincided with demonstrators who have remained outside the center for more than a week.

Delaney Hall Faces New Protests Over Migrants’ Situation

The latter group denounces the alleged conditions faced by migrants detained inside the facility.

According to their complaints, some immigrants are enduring conditions they describe as inhumane.

Although no clashes like those seen in previous days were recorded during the day, there were several moments of tension.

Protesters opposed to the Trump administration’s immigration policies repeatedly confronted the group supporting ICE.

According to reports, this was the first time the group supporting immigration authorities went to Delaney Hall.

The situation kept a highly tense atmosphere for much of the day.

Strong Presence of Federal Agents

A major security operation was also deployed at the main entrance of Delaney Hall.

A group of federal agents remained stationed in the area with riot shields.

Some of the officers carried rifles.

The operation also included support from an armored vehicle.

The presence of federal forces came after unrest reported in recent days.

On Thursday, clashes broke out between ICE agents and protesters demonstrating against the government’s immigration policies.

The incidents increased concern among state authorities over possible new confrontations.

Even so, scenes of violence similar to those previously recorded did not repeat on Saturday.

Concern Grows Over the Detainees

On Friday, after the unrest that left nine people detained, New Jersey’s Democratic governor, Mikie Sherrill, announced measures to prevent new episodes of violence.

The governor said a protected zone would be established to allow a peaceful protest outside the Delaney Hall center.

Sherrill argued that she wants to prevent situations similar to those that occurred in January in Minneapolis.

According to her, in that episode, immigration agents killed two U.S. citizens who were protesting against immigration raids.

Meanwhile, lawmakers, activists, and relatives continue keeping watch outside the facility.

They have spent more than a week trying to obtain information about the situation inside the facility.

The privately managed center houses around 300 immigrants.

Some of the detainees have begun a hunger strike.

Participants in the protest denounce conditions they consider inhumane inside the complex.

Delaney Hall is the largest ICE detention center on the East Coast of the United States.

It has more than 1,000 beds and is managed by GEO Group.

The facility’s operation is backed by a 15-year contract valued at $1 billion.
