According to Heraldo de México, it was initially reported that the U.S. officials were part of the United States Embassy.

However, new revelations indicate they were linked to the CIA.

According to statements cited by The Washington Post, the agents were returning from a counter-narcotics operation.

Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, director of the State Investigation Agency, also died in the accident.

The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated she had no prior knowledge of the operation.

She indicated the decision may have been made by the government of Chihuahua.

“It was a decision by the government of Chihuahua. We are requesting more information,” she said during a press conference.

She reiterated that there are no joint anti-drug operations between Mexico and the United States.

She also noted that authorities will review whether any laws were violated.

Despite this, she expressed condolences for the deaths of the four officials.

She added that the Mexican government will provide support in this case.

According to officials cited anonymously, the CIA has intensified its role in combating drug trafficking.

This reportedly includes increased training for local units along the border.

There are also mentions of drone use in Mexican territory to track cartel leaders.

These actions would be in response to direct orders from President Donald Trump.

According to the report, the agency has shared more intelligence with Mexican authorities.

Some U.S. officials stated these efforts have yielded results.

Among them is the location of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was one of the most wanted individuals.

Reactions after the accident

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, expressed condolences over the incident.

He mourned the deaths of the two CIA agents and the Mexican officials.

Meanwhile, Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno provided details about the accident.

He stated the crash occurred after an operation in a mountainous area.

The mission was related to locating drug laboratories.

The vehicle they were traveling in skidded and fell into a ravine.

Minutes later, the truck exploded.

Authorities have not determined whether the cause was mechanical failure or an external factor.

  • What’s next: Investigations will seek to clarify the circumstances of the accident and the extent of U.S. involvement in the operation.
