According to EFE, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday a historic shift in the country’s foreign policy.
During a press conference in Ottawa, Carney stated that Canada intends to officially recognize the State of Palestine.
The decision will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September.
The prime minister said this stance is a response to the “unbearable suffering” experienced by the Palestinian population, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank.

The Canadian leader pointed to Israel as primarily responsible for the worsening humanitarian situation.
He cited the obstruction of humanitarian aid, settler violence, and plans to annex Palestinian territories as the main causes.
“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution,” Carney said.
According to him, that solution envisioned an independent, viable Palestinian state coexisting with a secure Israeli state.
Is the Two-State Solution Still Viable?

However, Carney argued that this path is no longer feasible due to a lack of political will and the worsening conflict.
While acknowledging the October 7, 2023 attack carried out by Hamas, the prime minister stressed that the greater responsibility lies with the Israeli government.
“The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. And it is worsening rapidly,” he stated.
Carney argued that the Israeli state has allowed the situation to deteriorate to critical levels.
Palestinian Reforms as a Condition for Recognition

He also highlighted that he has held talks with Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority.
In those conversations, Carney made clear that Canada’s recognition is contingent upon Abbas committing to key reforms.
Among these reforms are holding general elections in 2026 and demilitarizing the future Palestinian state.
The prime minister was firm that Hamas would not be allowed to participate in those elections.
Canada Recognizes Palestine and Calls for Peace
“Hamas must disarm and can play no role in Palestine’s future governance,” he declared.
He also demanded the immediate release of all hostages kidnapped since the October 7 attack.
Carney explained that Canada is working directly with countries such as Jordan.
The goal of this cooperation is to provide urgent assistance to the Palestinian population.
A New Diplomatic Push from Ottawa
He announced that efforts will intensify in the coming days to design a viable peace plan.
This plan will include governance and security mechanisms for the future Palestinian state.
It will also ensure the effective delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The impact of this announcement will be closely watched in the coming weeks, especially during the UN General Assembly.
