In April of last year, Elsa Laremont Stranczek, 16, the daughter of a local teacher, was driving a Volkswagen Tiguan near Woodacre, California, when the vehicle veered off the road, hit a tree, and caught fire.
Olive Koren (14), Sienna Katz (15), Josalynn “Josy” Osborn (15), and Ada Kepley (15) died in the crash.
Stranczek and another passenger, Marley Barclay (14), survived with serious injuries.
From the beginning, both said an oncoming driver crossed into their lane and forced them off the road.
However, police reported finding no evidence of another vehicle involved.
California authorities cite speeding as cause of fatal teen car crash
The investigation concluded that the crash was caused by excessive speed and an unsafe maneuver.
According to the report, Elsa Laremont Stranczek was traveling in a 40 mph zone, and the speedometer was “frozen” at 65 mph after the impact.
It was also confirmed that Stranczek was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
Barclay told investigators she remembered seeing headlights from another vehicle before the accident and that the last thing she heard was Stranczek screaming.
Families divided: conflicting versions of events
The case has led to strong disagreements among the victims’ parents.
While some support the official version, others believe a third driver may have caused the crash.
Christie Batanides, Osborn’s mother, questioned Elsa Laremont Stranczek’s account:
“I knew she must have been driving too fast… Cars don’t just burst into flames.”
She also criticized the driver’s behavior on social media after the accident.
On the other hand, Gail Koren, Olive’s mother, expressed a different view:
“I feel that someone is responsible for the girls’ deaths, and it is not [Stranczek].”
She even raised deeper concerns:
“Is someone getting away with committing a murder?”
Linda Kepley, Ada’s mother, took a more reflective approach.
She said the exact events inside the vehicle may never be fully known and considered different possibilities, including driver error or distractions.
“If she was speeding, she’s a teenager, and young people speed… We are all human. We all have flaws.”
Legal process and lawsuits intensify conflict
In October, Stranczek was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. She has pleaded not guilty, and the charge could carry up to one year in detention.
The legal process has intensified tensions.
Some families have filed lawsuits against Marin County over allegedly dangerous road conditions, while other legal actions directly target the driver.
A petition was also launched to remove Stranczek and her mother from the school campus where she works as a teacher.
TikTok and harassment claims deepen controversy

A TikTok video posted by Stranczek fueled further outrage and was widely interpreted as offensive.
A close friend of Osborn was brought before a judge for sending a message deemed “hurtful,” arguing that the video was “extremely offensive” and that “Josy’s spirit and memory were being trampled.”
Stranczek’s mother said her daughter has received ongoing hate messages:
“I understand people are grieving… But there is a difference between grief and constant harassment.”
Barclay’s mother also defended her daughter, stating she has been targeted for maintaining her version that another driver was involved.

Community fractured by grief and uncertainty
The impact of the crash has left a deep mark on Fairfax, where many of the families had close relationships before the tragedy.
Mayor Stephanie Hellman summarized the situation:
“In a small community like ours, the bonds are deep.”
From the prosecutor’s office, Lori Frugoli emphasized that the process will move forward based on evidence:
“Our responsibility is to ensure the legal process is fair, thorough, and evidence-based.”
What’s next for Elsa Laremont Stranczek
The case continues in court as divisions among the families persist.
The legal resolution will be key in determining responsibility, but it is unlikely to fully heal the wounds left by this tragedy in the community.
