At least three students from the University of Iowa were injured following a shooting early Sunday morning in Iowa City.

The incident took place in a pedestrian area near the university campus, according to the institution’s president.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:46 a.m. local time.

Authorities in Iowa City reported that the situation began after a large fight broke out in the pedestrian zone.

The events took place near the intersection of East College Street and South Clinton Street.

This area is located just east of the university campus, according to ABC News.

“Officers who arrived at the scene heard gunshots,” police said.

“Emergency services are on the scene. Victims have been confirmed,” they added.

Videos recorded by bystanders showed the scale of the chaos.

The footage, verified by ABC News, captured multiple people fighting.

It also shows a crowd running for safety while gunshots can be heard.

Students Among the Confirmed Injured

The president of the University of Iowa, Barb Wilson, confirmed that at least three students were injured.

The information was shared in a statement addressed to faculty and staff.

“As we await more information, I am thinking of these students, their families, friends, and everyone who cares about them,” Wilson said.

“They are in my thoughts, along with all members of our community who are hurting or feeling impacted at this time.”

So far, no updates have been provided regarding the condition of the injured.

The victims were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.

Police indicated that several individuals were affected during the shooting.

State Response and Support for Investigation

The governor of Iowa, Kim Reynolds, reacted to the shooting on Sunday morning.

“This morning, Kevin and I are praying for the victims of the shooting in Iowa City and their families,” she wrote.

“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” she added.

Reynolds confirmed she spoke with university officials following the incident.

“I have spoken with University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson and Board of Regents President Robert Cramer.”

She also assured full state support for the investigation.

“I have assured them that all state resources are available to assist in the investigation.”

The Department of Public Safety has already contacted local police.

The goal is to support the ongoing investigation.

For now, authorities continue gathering information about what happened.
