The man identified as responsible for one of the most violent recent incidents in the United States had a history that had already raised concerns years earlier.

Recent information indicates that Shamar Elkins, 31, had previously faced legal trouble.
In 2019, he pleaded guilty to illegal use of a weapon in the Caddo District Court in Shreveport, the city where the tragedy occurred.
According to local media reports such as KTBS, later cited by NBC and CBS, Elkins also faced a charge for carrying a firearm on school property, although that charge did not move forward.
Police documents state that the incident occurred when Elkins fired five shots at a vehicle outside Caddo Magnet School while several children were nearby.
After pleading guilty to the first charge in October of that year, he received 18 months of probation.
According to police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon, this conviction “likely prohibited him from legally possessing firearms.”
A profile with military background and warning signs
In addition to his criminal record, the United States Army confirmed that Elkins served in the Louisiana National Guard from 2013 to 2020.
During that time, he worked as a signal support systems specialist and in fire support roles.
This adds another dimension to the attacker’s profile, who, according to family members cited by The New York Times, had mental health issues and had expressed suicidal thoughts prior to the attack.
Despite these warning signs, it has not been confirmed how he obtained the weapon used in the shooting.
The shooting: a case that shakes Shreveport, Louisiana
The deadly shooting took place Sunday in Shreveport, a city of nearly 200,000 people in Louisiana.
Authorities identified the gunman as the father of seven of the eight deceased children, whose ages ranged from one to 14 years old.
Two adult women were also injured during the incident, one of them critically.
After the attack, Elkins fled by stealing a vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that ended in a nearby town. The suspect was ultimately killed after being shot by officers.
Authorities have described the incident as a “domestic disturbance,” although they have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack.
Gun violence: numbers continue to rise
This case marks the deadliest shooting in the United States since 2024, in a context where gun violence remains an ongoing concern.
So far this year, the country has recorded 115 mass shootings, defined as incidents with at least four victims, according to data from Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks such events.

Why this debate on gun control matters
The case once again raises questions about failures in gun control systems, especially when prior criminal records and warning signs exist.
It also reopens the discussion on mental health and preventing tragedies within family environments.
What’s next: Police continue investigating to determine the motive behind the attack and how Elkins obtained the firearm.
Meanwhile, the case adds pressure on authorities and lawmakers in a year already marked by rising gun violence across the country.
