Former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies have triggered a wave of anxiety in U.S. schools.

Affecting both students and their families.

The fear of immigration raids has led to school absences, protests, and legal challenges in various cities.

In Fresno, California, rumors of alleged immigration raids in schools caused panic among parents, despite the information being false.

In Denver, an immigration raid in an apartment complex resulted in numerous students not attending school.

In Alice, Texas, a school official falsely claimed that immigration agents would board school buses to check documents.

«I have heard them say, ‘Let’s hope we never get caught alone.’ That would terrify them,» said Angelib Hernández, a mother in Colorado, who stopped sending her children to school after Trump’s inauguration.

The uncertainty about her immigration status and the fear of family separation led her to take this extreme measure.

Trump’s executive orders expanded deportation criteria and removed restrictions on immigration raids in schools.

Although there are no official reports of operations inside educational institutions, the fear has prompted some school districts to demand changes in immigration policies.

Fwd.us, an organization advocating for immigration reform, estimated in 2021 that 600,000 K-12 students in the U.S. lack legal status.

Additionally, nearly four million children have at least one undocumented parent, increasing uncertainty among families.

Uncertainty Across Several U.S. Regions Over ICE Raids

The uncertainty over ICE raids has led some states to consider stricter measures against the education of migrant children.

In Oklahoma, Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters promoted a rule requiring proof of citizenship to enroll children in school.

Although the measure was vetoed by Governor Kevin Stitt, it reflected the growing pressure against migrants’ educational rights.

In Tennessee, Republican lawmakers have proposed a bill allowing school districts to decide whether to accept undocumented students.

«We hope lawsuits will help overturn the precedent that protects the education of these children,» stated the bill’s proponents.

Research has shown that immigration raids negatively impact students’ academic performance.

Despite the fear and uncertainty, schools remain a refuge for thousands of migrant children in the United States.

However, the impact of immigration policies on education remains a challenge that communities must face daily, reported ‘The Associated Press‘.
