The State Department recommends avoiding travel to the city of Ocozocoautla, Chiapas, in southeastern Mexico.

The State Department’s travel advisory for the state of Chiapas has been classified as a Level 2.

This indicates that greater caution should be exercised due to the incidence of crime.

The United States Embassy in Mexico has issued this alert, instructing U.S. government employees to avoid the area until further notice.

Citizens and employees in the region are urged to steer clear of the affected area and seek a safe haven if they are already in it.

Pay attention to updates

Residents and travelers have been advised to follow updates from local media and local authorities, and call 911 in case of emergency.

They have also been asked to notify friends and family about their location and safety, according to EFE.

On Tuesday, a confrontation between the military and a group of criminals took place in the community of Vicente Guerrero, in Ocozocoautla.

Federal authorities have deployed more than 1,000 agents, including federal and state forces.

What is happening in Chiapas?

In recent weeks, the region has witnessed several confrontations.

These clashes have occurred between organized crime groups and agents of the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) and the Guardia Nacional.

Two members of the Policía Estatal Preventiva (PEP) have become the latest victims of the rampant brutality plaguing the streets of the municipality of Ocozocoautla.

They were executed by hitmen amidst a violent dispute for territorial control between two criminal organizations.

According to reports from the Chiapas Attorney General’s Office, the two officers, from the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPyPC), were on duty at the time.

They were ambushed by a group of armed men.
