According to Univision, Almeida decided to call his wife by video after realizing the traffic stop could become more serious.

«I’m worried. I’m very worried.»

According to the family’s account, the conversation with the officer initially remained cordial and included questions about his job, his family, and his immigration status.

However, the situation changed when the officer said she would send a photograph of his driver’s license to immigration authorities.

Moments later, Alejandro told his wife:

«Honey, they’re going to arrest me.»

According to the family, when he asked why he was being detained, he did not receive a specific explanation.

As shown in the footage shared by Univision, an officer responded:

«I wish I had an answer for you.»

While waiting to be taken into custody, Almeida used the call to leave instructions for his wife.

«Honey, they’ll transfer this week’s money to you today… Take care of our son.»

He became emotional as he spoke.

Only Two People Were Taken Into Custody

According to the family, several people with different immigration cases were traveling in the vehicle, including some asylum seekers.

However, only Alejandro Almeida and another man identified as Ricardo Varela were taken into custody by immigration authorities.

The Texas immigration arrest occurred just months after Alejandro’s sister-in-law, Betania, and her two children, ages 9 and 11, were detained while walking to a school bus stop.

After spending several weeks in custody, they were released on May 14.

As of now, Alejandro’s relatives say they do not know how long he will remain detained or what the next step will be in his immigration proceedings.
