The Social Security Administration (SSA) has already confirmed the August 2026 payment schedule.

  • During the month, millions of retirees and Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries will receive their deposits on different dates, depending on the type of benefit or their date of birth.

Why it matters: For millions of families in the United States, these payments represent the primary income for covering basic expenses such as housing, food, medications, and services, so knowing the dates avoids delays and allows for better monthly budget planning.

These are the official Social Security payment dates for August

The SSA reported that four rounds of Social Security payments will be issued in August, fewer than in July, when additional deposits were made due to the SSI calendar.

  • The first payment will arrive on Monday, August 3 and corresponds to those who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, as well as people who receive Social Security and SSI simultaneously.

For the rest of the beneficiaries, the deposits will be distributed as follows:

  • Wednesday, August 12: born between the 1st and 10th.
  • Wednesday, August 19: born between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, August 26: born between the 21st and 31st.

In the case of SSI, the Social Security Administration advanced the August payment to Friday, July 31, since August 1 falls on a Saturday. This adjustment is a common practice when the official date falls on a weekend or a holiday, as the SSA itself explains.

Changes to Social Security that could arrive in 2027 and could affect you

Although the August payments are already defined, attention is also focused on the announcements expected for October.

The SSA will then announce the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2027, which will determine the increase in benefits for the coming year.

In the meantime, different organizations have already published their first projections:

  • Mary Johnson, a Social Security and Medicare analyst, estimates a COLA of up to 4.7%.
  • The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) projects an increase close to 3.8%.
  • AARP calculates an approximate increase of 3.6%, equivalent to about $75 per month for the average benefit of a retired worker.

The official figure will depend on inflation recorded during the third quarter and will be announced by the SSA in October.

Income limits could also change

Another adjustment expected for 2027 would affect those who continue to work while receiving Social Security benefits.

  • According to Social Security Board projections, the lower income limit could increase to $25,200, while the upper limit would reach $67,200.
  • Additionally, the cap on income subject to Social Security tax could be raised to $190,200, which would imply higher contributions for some workers with higher salaries.

The Social Security Administration indicated that both these limits and the final percentage of the COLA will be officially confirmed on October 14, when it publishes the updates for fiscal year 2027.
