Millions of homeowners in New York will begin receiving extra money in the coming months thanks to a state tax relief program.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that nearly 3 million residents will receive more than $2 billion in benefits through the STAR program.

  • Why it matters: The cost of living remains one of the main concerns for many families in the United States. In a context marked by high prices for housing, food, gasoline, and other essential expenses, this tax relief could represent a breather for thousands of New York households.

Millions Will Receive Tax Rebates in New York

According to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, payments have already begun to be distributed and will continue arriving during the summer and fall.

The funds correspond to the STAR program, which offers benefits to homeowners who meet certain income and residency requirements.

Most STAR credit beneficiaries will receive checks between $350 and $600.

However, older adults who qualify for the enhanced version of the program could receive between $700 and $1,500, depending on their particular situation.

The state government indicated that these benefits are aimed mainly at homeowners with incomes below the limits established by the program.

For many older adults, the income threshold is below $110,750 per year, while homeowners must have income below $500,000.

Who Can Receive Payments in New York?

The STAR program is designed to help homeowners who use the property as their primary residence.

Benefits can be received in two ways: through a direct reduction in property taxes or through a tax credit sent by mail or direct deposit.

State authorities said homeowners who are already enrolled in the STAR credit system will automatically receive their corresponding payments.

For those who are not yet participating in the program, the New York Department of Taxation and Finance keeps the enrollment process available through the official website.

The agency’s acting commissioner, Amanda Hiller, emphasized the importance of homeowners checking whether they meet the requirements to access the benefit and take advantage of the available savings.

How to Track the STAR Check and Speed Up Payment

Beneficiaries can check the status of their payment through the official portal at ny.gov/STAR.

On that same site, it is also possible to register to receive future benefits through direct deposit, an alternative that helps avoid delays associated with traditional mail.

Authorities recommend completing enrollment as soon as possible: For direct deposit to be processed on time this year, homeowners must register at least 15 business days before their local school tax payment deadline.

In cities such as New York, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, some residents could receive benefits sooner because their school tax calendars are due earlier than in other regions of the state.

The Goal Is to Ease the Cost of Living for New Yorkers

During the announcement, Governor Hochul said the program is part of a broader strategy to return money to taxpayers and help them face everyday costs.

The state administration also highlighted other recently promoted measures, such as tax credits for families with children and tax reductions for middle-income sectors.

In addition to the payments, the Department of Taxation will organize regional seminars starting in July to guide homeowners on how the STAR program works and the steps needed to access its benefits.

  • What’s next: Checks will continue to be distributed throughout the summer and fall. Eligible homeowners can review the delivery schedule and verify the status of their payments through the official STAR program portal.

State authorities recommend staying aware of local dates and considering the direct deposit option to receive the money faster.
