According to Newsweek, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has launched a legal offensive against Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, demanding a retraction and public apology for statements linking her to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The demand was formalized through a $1 billion legal notice issued by her attorney, Alejandro Brito, and addressed to both Biden and his legal representative, Abbe Lowell.

The conflict arose after a video interview in which Hunter Biden claimed that Epstein introduced Melania Trump to her husband, President Donald Trump, in the late 1990s.

Biden also suggested that the presidential couple’s connections to Epstein were “broad and deep,” statements that the first lady’s legal team described as false, defamatory, and highly damaging.

Hunter Biden’s interview was broadcast by Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan in early August 2025.

In it, the former president’s son cited a Daily Beast article based on claims by Trump biographer Michael Wolff.

That outlet later retracted the content after receiving a letter from Melania Trump’s lawyer challenging its headline and framing.

However, the interview video spread widely across social media and digital platforms, reaching millions worldwide.

Terms of the Legal Notice

On August 6, attorney Alejandro Brito sent the letter to Biden demanding the immediate removal of the statements and a public apology.

The letter warned that if Biden did not comply by August 7 at 5:00 p.m. EST, Melania Trump would reserve the right to sue for over $1 billion in damages.

Brito argued that Biden’s statements came from a “false narrative” spread by Wolff and a now-retracted Daily Beast report.

He also noted that the viral nature of the content amplified the harm to his client’s reputation.

Hunter Biden’s Response

According to Fox News, Biden did not meet the deadline set by the first lady’s legal team.

In remarks to a local TV station, the former president’s son flatly rejected the idea of apologizing.

“Screw that, that’s not going to happen,” he said when asked about the lawsuit and legal notice.

He added that he would be willing to offer a platform for Donald and Melania Trump to publicly explain the nature of their relationship with Epstein.

Context and Public Pressure

The controversy comes amid growing scrutiny over ties between public figures and Jeffrey Epstein.

The Department of Justice recently announced that it will not release further information about his 2019 prison death, ruled a suicide.

This decision contradicted promises by Trump administration officials who had pledged to fully release the so-called “Epstein files.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, the DOJ opted not to disclose the documents after then–Attorney General Pam Bondi warned Trump that his name appeared in them—something the president denies.

Trump and Epstein’s Relationship

Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein maintained a friendship during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Reports by The Wall Street Journal claim that in 2003, Trump sent Epstein a congratulatory letter accompanied by a drawing of a nude woman.

The current president has denied this episode and any improper connection with the financier.

National and international media have revived these accounts following Hunter Biden’s statements, escalating political and media tension.
