A man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was attacked by an alligator while trying to escape authorities for a second time in a Louisiana swamp, state officials reported.

The incident occurred during a pursuit involving several law enforcement agencies and ended with the suspect’s capture after a series of escape attempts.

The Chase Began After a Crash

According to EFE, the incident occurred on June 7 in Louisiana.

Authorities said Víctor Rivas, 40, drew police attention after his vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier.

Despite the impact, the man continued driving on a highway located near New Orleans.

Louisiana State Police officers later attempted to stop him after observing alleged signs of intoxication.

However, Rivas decided to flee.

Authorities launched a search in the area to locate him.

Shortly afterward, sheriff’s deputies managed to find him walking along a nearby road.

When officers approached to arrest him, Rivas fled again.

This time, he ran back into the swamp.

It was during that second escape that something unexpected happened.

Authorities reported that the man was attacked by an alligator while trying to cross the swampy area.

As a result of the attack, he suffered injuries to both arms.

The incident was captured by the body camera of one of the officers participating in the operation.

Despite the wounds caused by the animal, Rivas continued trying to escape from officers.

The pursuit continued for several more minutes inside the wetland area.

Drones Helped Locate the Suspect Injured in the Louisiana Alligator Attack

Authorities used drones to continue the search from the air.

Thanks to that technology, officers were able to locate the suspect again.

Rivas was finally arrested when he came out of the swamp.

After the arrest, he was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities said the injuries suffered during the attack were not life-threatening.

He currently faces charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office also referred to the alligator involved in the incident.

In a statement, the agency said the animal “was not injured and has since returned to its regular patrol of the swamp.”

Louisiana is the state with the largest alligator population in the United States.

According to information provided by authorities, between 2 and 3 million alligators inhabit the region’s vast swamps, rivers, and wetlands.

Authorities are continuing the legal process against Rivas on charges related to allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and resisting arrest.
