Democrats from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have accused U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of concealing evidence related to the death of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was fatally shot by federal agents during an operation in Houston.

The allegation challenges not only how the operation unfolded but also the information authorities released afterward.

The case has reignited debate over the transparency of federal agencies during immigration enforcement operations and the ability of families to obtain independent investigations.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially presented one version of events, lawmakers say newly uncovered evidence contradicts key parts of that account.

Democratic investigation questions the official version

Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced their findings following a parallel hearing held in Houston on July 24.

According to the lawmakers, the evidence they reviewed suggests there were omissions and an incomplete presentation of what occurred on July 7.

One of their primary concerns involves the alleged presence of illegal drugs inside the vehicle Lorenzo Salgado was driving.

The initial account from authorities stated that an FBI agent reported seeing bags containing a white crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine.

However, the lawmakers argue that later testing disproved that claim.

According to their statement, laboratory tests conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety came back negative for narcotics.

They also said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the substance found was electrolyte powder.

Lawmakers noted that this finding is consistent with what Salgado’s family had maintained from the very beginning.

The case centers on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a worker heading to his job

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was 52 years old when he died during the federal operation.

According to information presented by lawmakers, he was traveling to work that morning with his brother and two coworkers.

The representatives said the vehicle was stopped by ICE agents during an operation targeting another immigrant who allegedly lacked legal immigration status.

After Salgado’s death, the case gained national attention because of the discrepancies between the official account and the version presented by his family and immigrant rights organizations.

Lawmakers argue that the evidence uncovered afterward strengthens concerns about the conduct of the federal agents involved.

In their conclusions, they also criticized what they described as the government’s public portrayal of Salgado following the incident.

The lawmakers summarized their position with the following statement:

«Federal agents killed a man on his way to work, concealed the evidence, and administration officials led a smear campaign against Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man who built homes to support his family.»

Another key issue raised by the lawmakers was the absence of federal agency representatives during the Houston hearing.

According to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, officials from ICE, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were invited to testify.

However, lawmakers said all three agencies declined to participate in the session.

That decision has fueled criticism from those who believe the case requires greater transparency and accountability.

As of now, the official position remains the one released by DHS after the July operation.

According to that account, agents were attempting to stop the vehicle as part of an operation targeting another immigrant who was allegedly in the country without legal status.

The findings presented by Democratic lawmakers do not replace the official investigations, but they increase political pressure to fully clarify what happened.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s death adds to growing scrutiny of immigration operations

The case also comes amid broader concerns about the use of force during immigration enforcement operations across the United States.

According to data cited by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, at least six people have died this year after being shot by immigration agents.

Those cases also include U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renée Good, who died during a large-scale operation in Minnesota in January.

The lawmakers’ findings could intensify calls for fully independent and transparent investigations.

Meanwhile, the Lorenzo Salgado ICE investigation remains one of the most controversial federal immigration enforcement cases of 2026.
