The possible withdrawal of the Iran national football team from the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has generated uncertainty for organizers. The president of the Iranian federation, Mehdi Taj, described the team’s participation as “unlikely.”
What does FIFA’s regulation say?
FIFA Article 5 of the 2026 World Cup Regulations establishes clear sanctions in the event of withdrawal:
- More than 30 days before the tournament: a fine of approximately $324,000.
- Less than 30 days before the tournament: a minimum sanction of $647,000.
- In addition, Iran would have to reimburse $12 million received for preparation and participation ($1.5 million for qualification and $10.5 million for competing).
Who could replace Iran at the 2026 World Cup?

If the withdrawal becomes official, the Asian Football Confederation could maintain its quota of 8.5 slots.
The options would be:
- United Arab Emirates national football team
- Oman national football team
Both could enter the intercontinental playoff alongside Iraq national football team, which would face the winner between Bolivia national football team and Suriname national football team.
This scenario would determine the final Iran World Cup 2026 replacement if FIFA confirms the withdrawal.
Iran’s scheduled matches
So far, Iran has been assigned three matches on U.S. soil:
- June 15 vs. New Zealand national football team — SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
- June 21 vs. Belgium national football team — SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
- June 26 vs. Egypt national football team — Lumen Field, Seattle
Iran’s potential withdrawal would force FIFA to activate its disciplinary and sporting protocol just weeks before the largest tournament in history, which will feature 48 national teams.
