- Trump posts proposal to change the name of ICE.
- Defends immigration agents.
- White House promotes NICE.
U.S. President Donald Trump once again pushed the idea of changing the name of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to NICE, a proposal that, according to his explanation, seeks to counter what he considers a negative image promoted by the media against the agency.
Why it matters: The proposal comes amid an intense debate over immigration policies and ICE operations, an agency that continues to face criticism for its immigration enforcement actions across the country.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that ICE has been treated unfairly by what he called “fake news media.”
The president claimed that the agency has been “mistreated” at levels that, according to him, have never been seen before.

Additionally, he argued that much of the hostility toward immigration agents comes from political critics who oppose the agency’s actions.
In his message, Trump defended ICE members and described them as “patriots” who perform their work in a “hostile environment.”
He also used the post to ask his followers about the possibility of changing the institution’s name.
The poll suggested adding an “N” to the current acronym, preserving the essence of the agency’s name while incorporating a new word.

Trump explained that ICE stands for “Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
According to his explanation, NICE would add the word “National,” meaning the name would continue preserving the agency’s original letters.
The proposal also has a symbolic and communication-focused element.
In English, the word “nice” can be interpreted to mean “good,” “kind,” or “pleasant.”
The president said the change would also have the effect of “confusing” journalists who, according to him, frequently criticize the immigration agency.
The idea did not originate directly from Trump.
On March 25, a social media user identified as Alyssa Marleen wrote on X that she would like the president to change the name of ICE to NICE.
Her argument was that the media would then have to constantly refer to “NICE agents.”
Trump later responded to the post through Truth Social.
“Great Idea! Do it!”, the president wrote in support of the proposal.
The White House revived the campaign on social media
The initiative was later promoted by the White House through X.
The post included the message “ICE = NICE Agents.”
Along with the text, an artificial intelligence-generated poster was shared.
The image showed an ICE agent caring for a child.
The material was released at a time when the agency faces questions over its immigration operations.
Among the criticisms are allegations related to family separations.
There are also accusations involving the use of excessive force during some interventions.
In addition, the agency has faced scrutiny over the use of minors during the detention of undocumented parents.
Meanwhile, Trump continues publicly supporting ICE and promoting a name change proposal that combines a rebranding effort with a political message aimed at both his supporters and critics.
