The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released on Thursday the image of the man suspected of shooting at federal agents during a protest against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation at a cannabis farm in Camarillo, California.

The protest took place on July 10 during a raid at Glass House Farms in Ventura County. According to the FBI, the individual drew a weapon and fired at law enforcement officers, although no injuries were reported.

The agency is offering up to $50,000 in rewards for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

During the operation, authorities used non-lethal ammunition and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters.

Several attendees were arrested, including a disabled U.S. military veteran who claimed he was unjustly detained despite identifying himself as a U.S. citizen and security guard at the site.

The veteran, George Retes, reported being held for three days at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center without access to a lawyer or the ability to contact his family.

A university professor, identified as Jonathan Caravello, who teaches philosophy and mathematics, was also detained. He appeared before a judge and is awaiting release on bail.

Additionally, the operation resulted in one fatality: farmworker Jaime Alanís García, who fell approximately 30 feet while trying to escape the agents. He was hospitalized with severe injuries and died two days later after being taken off life support.

ICE raids spark tension in California

The Camarillo raid is part of a series of immigration operations launched by federal agencies since June 6 in various locations across California.

Another targeted site was a Glass House Farms facility in Carpinteria, also in Ventura County.

The confrontations, arrests, and use of force have drawn criticism from human rights and immigrant advocacy groups, who denounce what they see as excessive power by ICE and federal forces.

The release of the suspect’s photo for the shooting adds tension to an already controversial operation.
