  • Trump agrees to truce and pauses attacks on Iran
  • Two-week ceasefire
  • Negotiations continue

President Donald Trump announced a two-week bilateral ceasefire with Iran, avoiding for now a large-scale bombing campaign.

The decision came hours before the deadline of the ultimatum he had imposed to reach an agreement or face massive attacks.

The announcement introduces a pause in a conflict that had escalated rapidly in recent days.

Conditional ceasefire and pressure on Iran

Trump confirmed on Truth Social that he agreed to suspend attacks for two weeks.

The agreement was reached at the request of Pakistan, which acted as a mediator.

The president conditioned the truce on Iran allowing the “full, immediate, and secure” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

This strategic point is key to global energy trade.

Iran, for its part, confirmed that it would halt its “defensive operations” if the United States stops attacks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi indicated they would coordinate actions to guarantee safe passage through the strait.

The measure suggests an attempt to reduce tensions in one of the most sensitive points of the conflict.

Immediate impact of the U.S.-Iran truce on the oil market

According to CBS, following the ceasefire announcement, markets reacted immediately.

U.S. crude West Texas Intermediate fell by more than 13%.

The price dropped below $92 per barrel within an hour of the announcement.

During the Iran conflict, prices had reached levels not seen in years.

This was due to the near-total disruption of shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

This corridor is vital, as nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through it.

Despite the drop, prices remain above pre-war levels.

Ongoing negotiations and persistent tensions

The ceasefire was achieved after intense diplomatic efforts between the United States, Iran, and external mediators.

Over the weekend, Trump had demanded an “acceptable” agreement before the deadline.

He also threatened to destroy key infrastructure if his conditions were not met.

Hours before the announcement, he warned that “an entire civilization would die tonight.”

Although a pause was reached, there is still no formal long-term agreement.

Trump stated that both sides are “very advanced” toward a final deal and that Iran presented a 10-point peace plan as a basis for negotiations.

Previously, Iran had rejected a 15-point proposal from the United States.

Formal talks will begin in Islamabad and last two weeks.

Iran warned that it maintains “complete distrust” toward the United States.

It also made clear that if no agreement is reached, the conflict will continue.

Among its demands are the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the lifting of sanctions.

It also seeks control of the Strait of Hormuz and economic compensation.

It is unclear whether the United States will accept these conditions.

Trump has already shown opposition to Iran controlling the strait or charging tolls.

What’s next

The next two weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the Iran conflict.

Negotiations in Pakistan will determine whether an agreement is reached or escalation resumes.

The ceasefire offers a limited window to avoid a larger confrontation.

The outcome will depend on whether both sides can reduce their deepest differences.
