Mexico has made a decisive move to protect its steel industry.
On Saturday, a decree went into effect imposing temporary tariffs on imports of Chinese steel nails.
The measure was published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF) and follows a complaint filed by the Mexican company Deacero.
The Ministry of Economy (SE) confirmed that between 2021 and 2024, Chinese companies engaged in unfair trade practices.

This is a case of dumping—selling products below their normal value.
In this case, it refers to coil steel nails for nail guns, primarily used in the production of furniture and wooden structures.

According to the decree, a compensatory fee of $0.380 per kilogram will be applied to imports from China.
The SE indicated that this is a provisional measure, effective for four months while the investigation continues.
Is China Affected?
During the analysis of the period from April 2021 to March 2024, the SE found clear signs of damage.
According to the ruling, more than 99% of imports of this product came from China.
Furthermore, these imports increased by 66% during that period, seriously affecting domestic production.
“They had a negative impact on the economic and financial indicators of the domestic production sector,” stated the SE.
The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit will be responsible for enforcing the provisional fee, according to the EFE agency.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the damage to the national industry was clear and measurable.
This move comes amid global trade tensions, particularly between China and the United States.
Although Mexico has not taken sides, it is seeking to protect its economy from unfair practices with these temporary tariffs.
