According to the EFE agency, the Latino community in the United States could face a serious blow to its well-being if President Donald Trump’s proposed cuts to public health programs go forward.

The fiscal plan promoted by Trump, currently under debate in Congress, includes a drastic reduction of at least $715 billion to the Medicaid program.

The measure is part of an ambitious $4.9 trillion tax reform and budget reconciliation package.

The organization Voto Latino warned on Wednesday that the cuts directly threaten the medical coverage of at least 28.6 million Latinos.

According to the organization, the impact will be “disproportionate” on Latino communities, as they largely depend on programs like Medicaid and CHIP.

Medicaid provides health care to low-income individuals, while CHIP focuses on covering minors.

Voto Latino noted that nearly 28% of all Medicaid and CHIP recipients in the country are Latino—representing about 26.8 million people.

The report also highlighted that over 50% of Latino children rely on these programs for essential medical services.

Cuts Will Affect Women’s Health

Latina women will also be especially affected by the proposed budget cuts.

In 2021, more than 58% of births among Hispanic women were covered by Medicaid, according to data cited by the organization.

“Cutting these funds would reduce access to prenatal care and safe childbirth,” Voto Latino warned in its statement.

Roughly one in four women of reproductive age uses Medicaid for contraceptives and reproductive health services.

Because of this, civil rights organizations believe the measure will further deepen structural inequality.

“Cutting Medicaid to fund tax breaks for billionaires is a calculated decision that will leave millions behind,” Voto Latino said.

A recent national survey cited by the group revealed that 72% of Latino voters are concerned about the proposed cuts.

The figure reflects broad opposition among Hispanic communities to a proposal they see as harmful.

Congress Races to Approve Fiscal Plan

Nevertheless, Republican lawmakers continue to push ahead with marathon sessions in an effort to approve the measure before May 26, Memorial Day.

The conservative bloc’s goal is to bring the fiscal package to the Oval Office before July 4, Independence Day.

The legislative calendar has become a race against time that could define the future for millions.

Partially dismantling Medicaid would represent a rollback of decades of progress in health equity and inclusion.

Latino Mobilization Against Medicaid Cuts

Furthermore, it comes at a time of ongoing economic hardship for many Latino families still recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

As negotiations move forward in Congress, calls to defend Medicaid are growing louder.

Voto Latino has issued a call to action, demanding lawmakers reject a plan that places millions of vulnerable lives at risk.

The impact of this initiative would go beyond budget policy—it would become a battle for fundamental health rights.
