In an event that has caused a stir at the Punta Cana airport, technicians from the Plant Quarantine Inspection Service (AIPC) of the Ministry of Agriculture have seized kilos of food.
Authorities intercepted and seized fruits and vegetables that the renowned Spanish artist, Julio Iglesias, was apparently trying to introduce illegally to Dominican territory.
According to the Diario Libre news portal, this would not be the first time that the artist has been involved in this practice, being a repeat offender in trying to evade the regulations.
Despite having a villa in Punta Cana, La Altagracia province, it seems that Iglesias has not learned his lesson.
Julio Iglesias and food seizure
In the artist’s luggage, coming from the Bahamas on an aircraft with registration number N768JJ, 42.16 kilograms of fruits and vegetables were seized.
These are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherry, tomatoes, beets, celery, beans, spinach, lettuce, mushrooms and arugula, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture in a press release.
The director of Plant Health, engineer Rosa Lazala, spoke through the Department of Agriculture Communications.
Saying that the country’s Health and Quarantine technicians have intensified surveillance and inspection measures at ports, airports and the land border.
Intensified security measures
The measures that have been intensified in terms of surveillance include pre-checking and exhaustive screening of luggage and of all passengers entering the country.
