U.S. authorities have detected a worrying increase in the smuggling of chicken eggs from Canada.
This is driven by a sharp rise in egg prices in the United States.

In Detroit, one of the main entry points for Canadian products, the number of interceptions of smuggled eggs has increased by 36% so far in 2025, compared to the same period last year.
The spike in egg prices in the United States is directly related to the health crisis facing the poultry sector.
An outbreak of avian flu, affecting the industry for a year, has forced the mass culling of birds, significantly reducing production.
In February, the average price of a dozen eggs in the United States reached $5.90, almost a dollar more than in January.

In states like Florida, the cost exceeds six dollars, while in Canada, the same amount of eggs sells for just $2.52, which has encouraged the illegal trafficking of the product.
The price crisis has led to an increase in smuggling not only from Canada but also from Mexico.
In February, U.S. authorities detected a 158% increase in the illegal entry of eggs from the Latin American country.
Given this situation, border authorities have strengthened controls to curb the illegal trafficking of agricultural products and prevent health risks from uninspected products.
