The number of bodies found in a clandestine crematorium in Ciudad Juárez has risen to 386, sparking national and international outrage.

Among the most anguished voices is that of Olga Sáenz.

The widow of Peruvian citizen Arturo Morales Galindo.

So reported EFE.

Ms. Sáenz fears her husband’s remains are among the corpses piled up at the site, which operated under the name Plenitud Funeral Home.

“This is a nightmare, and no one is waking me up,”

Sáenz said through tears to the EFE news agency.

Her story reveals the human tragedy behind the scandal, marked by reports of fake cremations, scams against dozens of families, and institutional negligence.

Cremations That Never Happened

The case came to light on June 26, when authorities discovered the decomposing bodies at the Plenitud crematorium.

Since then, complaints have emerged implicating at least six other funeral homes in Ciudad Juárez, accused of charging families for cremation services that were never carried out.

Olga Sáenz recounted that her husband passed away in April 2022 and was entrusted to that funeral home. The delivery of his supposed ashes took more than a month and was plagued by excuses. “They told me they had no gas, that the manager was sick,” she recalled.

Doubt led her to open the urn with her son, and what they found was alarming: “It wasn’t ashes. It was like mortar, like construction material mixed with water.”

The Pain of Waiting for Answers

Olga Sáenz filed a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office and contacted the Peruvian Consulate, but the wait has been unbearable. “It’s very cruel. I think it’s the first time something like this has happened in the world,” she stated.

She urged President Claudia Sheinbaum to visit the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office to expedite the identification process.

The demand for justice grows with every testimony emerging from families deceived by unscrupulous funeral businesses.

The Catholic Church also condemned the events. “This is not only illegal or immoral. No one deserves to be treated like this, not even in death,” declared diocesan spokesperson Juan Carlos López.

Prosecutor’s Office Takes Action in the Clandestine Crematorium Case: One Arrested and More Investigations

So far, the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office has arrested Luis Arturo Arellano Cuarón, identified as the alleged person responsible for the clandestine crematorium.

Authorities continue to investigate the premises where the bodies were found, and more individuals are expected to be implicated.

The case has triggered a deep crisis of confidence in the handling of human remains in northern Mexico, where hundreds of families now face the worst uncertainty: not knowing whether the ashes they received were ever truly those of their loved ones.
