The absence of journalist Fernando del Rincón from CNN’s coverage of the capture of Nicolás Maduro caught the public’s attention over the past few days.
After his expected return to the United States, the host began to experience discomfort that quickly escalated from mild symptoms to a critical situation.
His wife, actress Jullye Giliberti, revealed exclusively that the deterioration was sudden and far more severe than they had anticipated.
The journalist, known for his constant coverage of the crisis in Venezuela, was unable to return on air as planned.
The First Symptoms That Raised Alarms

Giliberti explained that upon arriving home, Del Rincón began feeling unwell and unusually fatigued.
“He woke up worse, with chills and a very high fever; those were the first symptoms,” his wife explained.

Even so, CNN’s team decided to keep him assigned to coverage duties off camera, hoping for a quick recovery.
But his condition progressed: “It kept getting worse until he developed a fever of 40°C,” she said.
Fernando del Rincón’s Frustration at Not Being Able to Go On Air
For Del Rincón, missing the news event that has dominated the international agenda was especially painful.
According to Giliberti, the situation took an emotional toll on him: “Fernando’s frustration and helplessness were overwhelming, because there was no way he could go on air like that.”
At first, the couple believed it might only be exhaustion from travel and the intensity of recent days.
“We never thought this would last so long, nor did we know what it was,” she added.

The journalist insisted on avoiding the hospital, but his condition no longer allowed them to wait.
Giliberti recalled the decisive moment: “I told him, ‘My love, you’ve been telling me for three days that we’re not going to the doctor, but I see you’re not well… I took him to the emergency room in a truly critical condition.’”
At the medical center, he received hydration, oxygen, and intensive treatment with corticosteroids and steroids.
“They gave him everything,” his wife said, stressing that immediate action was necessary to stabilize him.

Respiratory Problems and Sleepless Nights
One of the most persistent symptoms has been a severe cough that prevents Fernando Del Rincón from holding long conversations.
“He can’t put together more than 10 words. I mean, he’s stuck with this horrible cough,” Jullye Giliberti explained.
Despite the severity of the illness, medical scans showed a reassuring sign: “Thank God, the scans didn’t show anything in the lungs.”
However, the cough has been so intense that it has prevented him from resting properly. “He doesn’t sleep, he hasn’t slept, because the cough won’t let him sleep.”
