The final farewell to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes took place amid an unusual security deployment and a ceremony marked by symbols reflecting the power he accumulated for years.

The leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) was buried Monday in Zapopan, a city within the Guadalajara metropolitan area, after a wake guarded by federal, state, and municipal forces.

El Mencho: a burial watched by federal, state, and municipal forces

At noon, the funeral hearse arrived at Recinto de La Paz, a cemetery located in western Guadalajara, about 23 kilometers from the funeral home where the wake was held.

Days earlier, the Guadalajara metropolitan area had already been under heavy military protection.

The body of El Mencho was transported in a golden coffin and received by a regional Mexican band that performed songs such as El muchacho alegre before the casket entered the chapel.

The scene was preceded by three cranes transporting dozens of floral arrangements that, due to their size, could not enter through the cemetery’s usual entrances.

Since Saturday, when relatives claimed the body at the Fiscalía General de la República in Mexico City, the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and state police had deployed a broad security operation across the metropolitan area.

The golden coffin of El Mencho quickly became one of the most discussed aspects of the burial.

The symbols and messages that marked the funeral of the CJNG leader

The casket arrived at the funeral home on Sunday night, escorted by civilian and military vehicles responsible for guarding the transfer.

From that moment, numerous floral arrangements began arriving, most composed of white roses.

Among them stood one with a ribbon displaying the initials “CJNG,” as well as another arrangement made of red roses shaped like a rooster — a reference to the nickname “El Señor de los Gallos.”

Most of the arrangements did not include the sender’s name.

Entry and exit at El Mencho’s funeral home were strictly controlled by military personnel.

An Army vehicle remained on site until the body was transported to the cemetery.

Lack of official confirmation fuels tension in Guadalajara

Although no federal, state, or municipal authority has officially confirmed the presence of the cartel leader’s remains, the military mobilization generated tension and fear among residents of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco.

The city will be one of Mexico’s three host locations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in about 100 days.

That context increases sensitivity to any potential outbreak of violence.

The state is still recovering from the disturbances that occurred on February 22, when Governor Pablo Lemus declared a “Code Red” for two days after the violent reaction of El Mencho’s allies following his death.

Military operation in Tapalpa triggered wave of violence

The military operation against Oseguera, 59, took place in Tapalpa, about 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara.

The intervention triggered road blockades, the burning of businesses, flight cancellations, and attacks on security forces in different regions of the country.

According to official information, 25 members of the National Guard and more than 30 members of the CJNG died during clashes following the operation, most of them in Jalisco.

Why it matters

The funeral of one of the most wanted criminals in Mexico and the United States not only highlighted the CJNG’s capacity for mobilization and symbolism, but also placed security in Jalisco at the center of the debate ahead of a major international event.

The combination of mourning, displays of power, and a massive military deployment left images that illustrate the complexity of the security situation in the region.
