Bovino stated that the agent was “highly trained” and had extensive operational preparation.
This included firearms training as a range safety officer, as well as specialized instruction in the use of non-lethal weapons.
According to Bovino, the shot was fired in self-defense and in defense of other agents present.
The official defended the agent’s actions, describing the situation as a direct threat.
How Did the Shooting in Which Alex Jeffrey Pretti Lost His Life Occur?
The incident took place at 9:05 a.m. local time in Minneapolis during an immigration operation.
Agents were attempting to detain an undocumented immigrant identified as José Huerta Chuma.
According to Bovino, Huerta Chuma had prior records related to domestic assault or disorderly conduct.
During the operation, an individual approached agents while carrying a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
Agents attempted to disarm him at that moment.
According to the federal version, the individual violently resisted. In response, an agent fired after determining his life was in danger.
Bovino stated that the man was also carrying two fully loaded magazines and had no visible identification at the time of the incident.
Medical teams arrived immediately. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the deceased was a 37-year-old white male.
O’Hara said the man apparently had a legal permit to carry firearms.
He also indicated that the victim had no notable prior incidents with law enforcement.
Clash Between Authorities and Local Protests

Following the shooting, Bovino accused local authorities of withholding key information.
He directly pointed to Police Chief O’Hara and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
He claimed they initially failed to disclose that the victim was armed.
Bovino also denounced what he described as “constant attacks” against immigration agents during recent operations.
He said these operations have faced strong resistance from local residents.
According to the federal official, approximately 200 protesters arrived at the scene after the shooting.
He alleged that demonstrators obstructed and assaulted agents.
Bovino called for cooperation from local authorities and the state of Minnesota.
Democratic Governor Tim Walz also addressed the incident.
Walz, along with Frey and O’Hara, urged the Trump administration to halt federal operations in the city.
Saturday’s shooting marks the second fatal incident in just over two weeks.
On January 7, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot and killed a 37-year-old woman.
The victim was identified as Renee Good.
