Mexican Regional Music Singer Adán Rodríguez Shot Dead in Culiacán, Sinaloa

The Mexican regional music industry is once again in mourning. José Adán Rodríguez, professionally known as Adán R and former lead singer of the popular norteño group Los Nuevos Rebeldes, was shot and killed on the night of Sunday, July 5, in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
The tragedy comes at a time of ongoing violence in the state and adds another name to the growing list of regional Mexican artists who have lost their lives in violent attacks across Mexico.
According to preliminary police reports, the attack occurred at around 9:00 p.m. in the Stanza Cantabria neighborhood, located in northern Culiacán.
The 29-year-old musician was in the garage of his home on Breñavieja Street, between Ampuero and Paseo del Álamo Boulevard, when armed individuals arrived in a vehicle.

Without saying a word, one of the vehicle’s occupants got out and repeatedly opened fire on Rodríguez before fleeing the scene.
Neighbors, alarmed by the multiple gunshots, immediately called 911.
Paramedics and members of the Mexican Army were among the first responders. They confirmed that the victim had died at the scene due to the severity of his gunshot wounds.

The death of Adán R has deeply shocked his more than 20,000 Instagram followers, where the artist remained highly active.
Just hours before he was killed, the singer documented his return to Culiacán on a commercial flight while proudly wearing a Mexico national soccer team jersey to watch the match against England.
His final Instagram Story was posted after the game ended.
In it, he expressed his disappointment with the result, writing: «They played like never before and lost like always. What a shame, my people. I guess we’ll have to go listen to El Recodo.»
Minutes after sharing that message, the singer was shot and killed at his home.

José Adán Rodríguez built a career spanning nearly two decades in music, spending five years as the lead vocalist and bajo sexto player for Los Nuevos Rebeldes.
On February 5, 2025, he officially announced his departure from the group to launch a solo career under the stage name Adán R, focusing on banda music and corridos.

So far, the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office, which is leading the investigation and oversaw the transfer of the body to the Forensic Medical Service, has not released any official information regarding the motive for the killing, nor has it reported any arrests.
The homicide adds to the ongoing security crisis that has gripped the state of Sinaloa since September 2024, fueled by internal conflicts between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The killing also recalls previous attacks against regional Mexican artists, including the 2006 murder of Valentín Elizalde and past attacks involving Sergio Gómez and Javier Rosas.
