Health authorities have issued an alert following the recall of several cottage cheese products due to a potential health risk.

The recall was announced by La Ceiba Foods Latin Market Inc., after the company detected possible contamination with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

This microorganism can cause serious infections, especially in young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

The affected products were distributed to supermarkets, grocery stores, and restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The recall includes products sold under the La Colonia and Selectos Latinos brands, along with other similar dairy products.

Among the affected items are «Salvadoran Cottage Cheese» and «Mexican Cottage Cheese,» available in 14-ounce and 16-ounce packages.

Authorities stated that the recall applies to all lots that are still within their expiration dates.

A larger commercial-size package, primarily used by restaurants, is also included in the recall.

Investigation underway as illnesses are reported

The recall was initiated after supplier Clover Hill Dairy notified the company of possible Listeria contamination at its production facility.

In addition, the FDA and the CDC are investigating a multistate outbreak linked to these products.

So far, officials have reported 12 illnesses and one death associated with the outbreak.

The bacteria can cause symptoms including fever, severe pain, nausea, and, in serious cases, life-threatening complications.

Urgent recommendations for consumers

Health officials urge consumers not to eat, sell, or distribute any of the recalled cottage cheese products.

According to the FDA, consumers should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The company said it is working closely with regulatory authorities to ensure food safety and prevent additional risks.

«La Ceiba Foods sincerely regrets any inconvenience,» the company said while reiterating its commitment to product quality.
